How safaris work

Safaris in Ranthambore run in two daily slots, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and the exact times shift with the season. They follow routes inside zones managed by the Rajasthan Forest Department, and you travel in a vehicle booked against your permit.

Permits come first

Only the Forest Department issues safari permits. Apply as early as you can, especially for weekends, school holidays and festival dates, because availability tightens quickly. Each traveller needs a valid government photo ID, and the details on the permit must match the ID you carry.

Zones and vehicles

The park is divided into numbered zones, and the department decides which zone and vehicle you are allotted. You may share a preference, but nobody can promise a particular zone. Open jeeps and larger canters are both used, and what is available depends on the day.

What to carry

Dress in layers, since mornings can be cold in winter and afternoons warm. Choose muted, earthy colours, and bring water, a hat, sunscreen and your ID. Binoculars and a camera are welcome, though some camera charges may apply.

Set your expectations

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed. Even without a tiger, Ranthambore rewards patient visitors with deer, birds, old lakes and ruined structures in the forest. Treat every ride as a chance to take in the whole landscape.
